TEAK AT BANANA BANK

Banana Bank has 100 acres of teak which was planted in 1999 through 2000.  Starting the grove from seedlings, growth has been very slow and deliberate having endured two tropical storms and two category 1 hurricanes.  Today we have a beautiful standing grove, a large pile of harvested logs, a fully operating saw mill and a furniture shop.

Grove-4

2010 Hurricane Richard tore down the Hummimgbird Highway, through Guanacaste Park,  slammed into Banana Bank taking out about 1/3rd of out teak, barreled on into the Yalback area and took out about 35,000 acres of prime jungle.

2016  again Banana Bank was the victim of  a hard hit by Hurricane Earl and again the teak  grove sustained serious damage.  The looming question  was if the trees could recover.

2017 on October 4th this photo was taken to answer the question as to if the trees can recover from a hurricane.  We are thankful that the grove continues to thrive.

Sawmill-1

After Hurricane Richard, trees that were down had to be cleared out of the grove.  Split,  bent and disfigured trees were also cut.  Some were cut to prevent overcrowding. The resulting stock pile of logs has kept the sawmill busy.

Turning logs into panels.

Sawmill-3

Continual cleaning and sorting keeps logs available for milling.
