Barton Creek Cave

Barton Creek Cave

Welcome to the Maya Underworld. Scenic farmland, hills and valleys with cattle grazing peacefully on emerald green pastures illustrate the route to Barton Creek Cave. Upon arrival you'll be greeted by your host, 3 large friendly dogs and a couple of beautiful green parrots. Your fully qualified pilot will guide your canoe skillfully through the flat calm waters where you'll be plunged into the darkness of the cathedral size cave. Switching on your powerful light will reveal angled walls stretching up to meet at a point over 100 feet above your head. The walls change as you delve further into the cavern. Smooth rock turns to crystal art and then gives way to plunging stalactites so close to the surface you might need to duck your head to complete the passage. Bats fly high above darting in and out of their pocketed dwellings in the cave wall. Your guide will regale you with tales of Mayan sacrifice while pointing out an ancient human skull and broken pieces of pottery on the slippery ledges above. Drops of water fall from the roof echoing across the water like the whisper of lost ghosts. A whole new view presents itself after turning back at a place where there is only room for the passage of water. Your flashlight beam reveals shadows and angles at every nook and cranny of the imposing structure. Back at the entrance you'll observe the green lushness of the park framed in a triangle of rock as you leave this ancient underworld.

Great Swimming spot.

Actun Tunichil Mucknal

Actun Tunichil Muknal

Just saying the name 'Actun Tunichil Muknal' brings mysterious visions to mind. This showing of the Maya Underworld is not a usual visitors tour in the sense that you are not paying to walk through a cave. You are paying for the privilege of being among an untouched archeological site. Getting to the actual ritual site takes about one hour of jungle hiking, then swimming, wading and climbing in an underground river to get to the site. In respect of this sacred site rules must be followed. Shoes must be taken off at the site and it is important to wear socks through the chambers. Footsteps must be taken with great care so as to not step on and possibly crush the bones and artifacts within. Overnight tours are offered sometimes and visitors have told stories of strange noises and ghostly visions passing by and disappearing into the cave walls, leaving the observer chilled and in awe. Plunging stalactites reach down to meet jutting stalagmites and sparkling crystal glows though this grand cathedral. For those interested in cave exploration an Actun Tunichil Muknal tour is a must.

Inland Blue Hole & St Hermans Cave

Inland Blue Hole & St Hermans Cave

St. Herman’s Cave is located about 500 meters (800 yards) from the Hummingbird Highway while the Information Center and parking are located just off the Highway. The tour starts with a leisure walk to St. Herman’s Cave. You have two choices; you can either hike on the Highland Trail or the Lowland Trail. The Highland Trail is much more picturesque but a little more exerting. It will take you through beautiful jungle mountain terrain with gorgeous views of the orchards below. Either trail however, provides an excellent opportunity for Birders and Naturalists to enjoy the flora and fauna of this national park. Some of the exotic birds to frequent this area include White Hawk, Spotted – Wood Quail, Crested Guans, and Keel- Billed Toucans. St. Herman’s Cave sits in a sinkhole 180 feet wide narrowing to a 60 feet-wide entrance. Concrete steps cover stone steps once cut by the Maya. Inside the cave is huge, dark and the underground river runs below you as you make your way to admire the stunning crystal formations within. When you've had your fill of caving you hike back out to the parking lot and another few minutes of driving gets you to the pristine limestone aqua Blue Hole swimming area. The Blue hole is a sinkhole formed by the collapse of an underground river channel. The Blue Hole steps lead to a 25 - feet deep pool, for which the park is named. It’s cool waters surrounded by dense forest are the perfect spot for a relaxing dip.

This is a half-day activity (can be done either before or after lunch) and an optional picnic lunch can be provided. Changing area is available at Blue Hole and this tour is fit for all ages.
