GRRRREETINGS FROM

BANANA BANK LODGE
& JUNGLE HORSEBACK ADVENTURE

We are beside ourselves with joy not only because 'tis the season to be jolly but because we have a new member to the Banana Bank family !!! After a very long awaiting we are privileged once again to be caretakers of a beautiful female jaguar. In April of 1981 a baby female jaguar was found in the Melinda Forest Reserve in the Pine Ridge.  The first time we saw her she was small enough to hold in our hand.    She may have been a runt or a reject from twins that are often born.  Typically one may be left behind.

The Belize Government gave her to us to care for which we did for 25 years and 7 months. At that time there was no zoo or Jaguar Preserve. We named her Tika and she was the star of many television productions, posters and wild life programs.  She died on December the 8th of 2006.

We asked the Belize Forestry Department to consider us if another orphan became available.  In early September of this year, this baby female jaguar was found by some loggers back in the Yalbac area when a tree fell near the place where she was hiding.  The mother was not there and the loggers retrieved the tiny baby. History repeated itself in that the zoo was occupied with a baby jaguar born this year and the Jaguar Preserve regarded her too small to fend for herself in the wild within the reserve so once again Belize Forestry Department entrusted us her care. We have named her Tikatoo insomuch as she certainly reminds us of our beloved Tika.

WELL BLOW ME DOWN !!
 Thatch Roof May 07
We want to thank the many, many emails received of concern and prayers in regards to the two "close calls" named Dean (August 13) and Felix (August 31). Both storms went from 0 to category 5 in record times and seemed to bulls-eye Belize. Dean (achieving 160 mph winds) veered north to Mexico and Felix (achieving 165 mph winds) decided on the Mosquito Coast in Nicaragua. Never in the history of hurricanes have 2 category 5 storms developed within 2 weeks of each other. It really had us holding our breath and running around especially because we had just re-thatched our restaurant in May !!(click to see video) It sure wouldn't be fun to go out and look for 12,000 bay leaf after a hurricane and a whole month of our entire construction crew to re-do the roof. By the way, I want to really hand it to our construction crew, they have really out-done themselves this year. First the completion on the most beautiful pool in Belize ( I know that sounds swank but hey ...... I have to hand it to their awesome talents) Then they did an amazing job on the restaurant roof - it is at least 3 times stronger than before and that roof lasted 18 years plus it looks really nice !! Now they are working on the building next to the pool. It is a 3 story building intended to have a new restaurant, bath and changing rooms on the first floor, a conference room / event center on the second floor and Carolyn Carr Gallery on the 3rd floor (yes, inspired by the hurricanes) she wants it as weatherproof as possible - HIGH AND DRY !!  Still no date for completion but we will keep you posted !!!!

INLAWS and OUTLAWS
 Inlaws & Outlaws
Congratulations to Tim and Lupita Banman who "tied the knot" at our beautiful Equestrian Center. We have had many weddings at Banana Bank but this is the first done in true cowboy style !! The bride however wanted to whisk Stinger off to the honeymoon !! She couldn't decide who was the better catch, her knight in shining armor or her trusty steed !! Many compliments to the wedding planner, every detail was true to the cowboy theme, Even the cake was a horseshoe, and the weather couldn't have been more perfect !!
Mark your calendars everyone .....

December 15th perfect day to get hitched !!!

Horse Race Painting

It is finished.
Finally the Carolyn Carr tribute to
Belize's love towards horse racing.
"BACKSIDE"
The backside of a horse is what propels the horse forward. The backside  determines the performance of the rest. The same goes with the backside of the track. This painting is about the  side of the horse and the track you seldom see.  It is about the side that only the true lover of racing likes to see. The backside, where the powerhouse of any true success is seldom pointed out.

 Cesar on Ralph
Banana Bank Champions of Cross Country Endurance Race

On November 17th, 28 contestants from various parts of Belize took the field to participate in the 24 mile cross country endurance race.  Banana Bank had 3 entries and we are very proud of our winning team. Banana Bank entries were Cesar Xi mounted on Ralph, a 6 year old quarter horse/mustang cross, Jose Pinelo mounted on Forrest Gump.

Endurance racing is a combination of speed and endurance.  At the beginning of the race the horse's pulse is taken which in the case of Ralph was 60 heart beats per minute. The pulse would normally be about 110 beats per minute after 2 1/2 hours of strenuous riding.   At the very end of the race, the pulse rate is taken again. 1 hour later, the pulse rate is registered for a third time and all horses who's pulse rate is not 64 or below are disqualified.  Then the remaining horses are given 1st, 2nd and 3rd place depending on their order crossing the finishing line.

Mention should be made here of the importance of a skilled rider.  If the rider lands flat on the horse causing a "bounce" it is very tiring for the horse and will slow him down.  Cesar, one of our, wranglers, rides like a jockey, bearing the majority of his weight on his own frame, foreword in the saddle and up in the stirrups.  It requires great strength in the legs and good timing to keep this up for 24 miles but it translates into a win.

Jose Pinelo, riding Forest Gump came in 3rd.  Congratulations to Cesar and Jose
